NHS Trust Compensates Parents of Boy Who Died of Sepsis

The parents of a four-year-old boy who died from sepsis have received a settlement and an apology from the NHS trust responsible for the hospital where he was seen.

The boy's parents had taken him to hospital four times in the week before his death, but symptoms of sepsis were missed on the first three occasions. On the fourth occasion he was admitted to the emergency department. Tragically, however, he died a few hours later.

An inquest found that, while the NHS trust had not been neglectful in its care, his medical records had not been looked at properly on his third visit to the hospital, and a chance to save his life using antibiotics was missed.

The NHS trust stated that, following an investigation, it had identified a number of areas for improvement and had taken immediate steps to address these.
