Millions in Compensation for Birth Injuries
A young girl who was left with serious disabilities after negligence by hospital staff during her birth has had a compensation settlement worth millions of pounds approved by the High Court.
Hannah Louise Gudd, now aged 10, was starved of oxygen during her birth. This caused damage to her brain and nervous system and she now has cerebral palsy, is blind and cannot eat solid foods. As a result of her injuries, her life expectancy has been drastically reduced.
Her mother brought a personal injury claim on Hannah’s behalf against Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, arguing that her injuries were the result of negligence on the part of hospital staff. The Trust admitted liability, apologised and expressed its deep regret for what had happened.
The settlement included a lump sum of £1.15 million, and Hannah will also receive annual payments of £135,000 until 2019, when they will increase to £225,000.
The compensation will give Hannah financial security and allow her family to continue to provide her with the care she requires.
