£18,000 Settlement for Incorrect Dental Treatment
A young woman who required hospital treatment after her dentist failed to diagnose an infected tooth has won damages in an out-of-court settlement.
Kimberley Wilson, 18, began to experience pain in her tooth about a year after it was filled by her dentist, Dr Syed Ahad. Her face swelled up and the pain was so intense that she had to go to hospital. The course of treatment involved first draining an abscess on the tooth and then undergoing an operation to have the tooth removed.
Ms Wilson decided to bring a claim against Dr Ahad. She was able to provide expert evidence that there had been an infection in the root of the tooth and that by filling it Dr Ahad had made it worse. The correct procedure would have been root canal treatment in order to eradicate the infection.
After undergoing the operation, Ms Wilson required further cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance of scarring to her neck.
Dr Ahad neither denied nor admitted liability, but an out-of-court settlement of £18,000 was agreed.
